A funny thing happened when Oak Park native Kathy Griffin began mocking celebrities in her stand-up routine. She became a celebrity herself. "I have the Midwestern, no-[nonsense] point of view," she said when reached at her Los Angeles home.

"I'm a little bit of an insider with celebrity culture, but I'm still on the outside looking to get into the party. And I expose Hollywood and celebrities for the self-absorbed morons they sometimes can be."

After disclaiming that our conversation was being taped for her reality show, "Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List," the comic talked about Oprah, Shamrock Shakes and hair plugs.

Jeremy Piven's hair plugs are an endless source of amusement for me. They're so obvious. And the ultimate Chicagoan to make fun of is Oprah. She thinks she's Jesus, and some days I believe her.

I was always just the girl who went to prom with the gay guy. The guy I went to prom with [Griffin attended Oak Park-River Forest High School] is now a choreographer with Disney.

I have never had a drink in my whole life. My beloved Irish-Catholic family has done enough for generations to come. But I miss Shamrock Shakes. I never do fast food, but I would rather have a Shamrock Shake than a drink.
