The city is usually covered in scarlet and white, the traditional colors of the hometown Ohio State Buckeyes. Yesterday, however, this central Ohio metropolis was bathed in a different color — purple.

Roughly 530 fans traveled from throughout the country to support the Holy Cross men's basketball team in its first-round NCAA game against the Southern Illinois Salukis last night.

The largest contingent making the 740-mile trip from Worcester to Columbus was the approximately 120 HC students who traveled by bus, thanks to a generous alumni donation. That group left Holy Cross at 6 a.m. yesterday and traveled straight through the day to the Nationwide Arena, where the Crusaders played last night. The trip took 12 hours.

“I was hesitant about going at first, but once the bus was offered and the alumni made the donation to lower the cost, there was no question about it,” Jackson said.

Mullaney, along with nearly every other Holy Cross student, was eager to travel to the game due to the tangible connection forged between the team and the student body during this special season.

According to HC associate athletic director Bill Bellerose, the NCAA allotted the school 530 tickets, which were distributed to approximately 100 student buyers and 85 season-ticket holders and alumni. The ticket office couldn't fill all of the requests, and subsequently had to turn some Crusaders fans away.

However, neither ticket shortages nor yesterday's bad weather in the Northeast could deter the Holy Cross faithful from reaching Columbus. Just ask Matt Wally (class of 1997), Chris Moriarty ('98) and his sister Ana Sharry ('03).

Wally explained that the group found out at 11 p.m. Thursday that their flight yesterday morning from Boston's Logan Airport to Columbus had been canceled due to inclement weather.
