Burberry factory set to enby adminPlans to mark the closure of a factory which makes clothes for designer label Burberry, with the loss of over 300 jobs, were being finalised today. Workers will march from the factory gates to a rally in the town, accompanied by a band and members of the Treorchy Male Voice Choir in what promises to be an emotional day for the local community. Politicians and union leaders involved in trying to save the factory from closure will join the march and will pledge to continue fighting to retain manufacturing on the site. Rhondda MP Chris Bryant (Lab) said today: "It is very depressing that Burberry has been so determined to close the factory, but the campaign to try to save jobs has been a tribute to the spirit of the people of the Rhondda. We just don't like taking things lying down. Local Welsh Assembly member Leighton Andrews added: "It will be a very sad day for the Rhondda when the factory closes, but we have all fought hard to keep it open and we will continue to try to find jobs for those who are left." Burberry said that more than 120 workers have found other jobs and pointed out that hundreds of vacancies have been identified in the local area, including 600 in the pipeline in call centres and supermarkets. The campaign to save the factory attracted support from many celebrities, including actress Emma Thompson and actors Rhys Ifans and Michael Sheen. This is cache, read story here |
