Ms Arbour, the UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights, will spend six days in Sudan, during which time she will visit conflict-wracked Darfur for the first time in two years.

Her arrival coincides with a series of demonstrations across the United States, expected to draw thousands of campaigners, including Hollywood celebrities, musicians and politicians from all sides.

The president said the 7,000-strong African Union (AU) peacekeepers on the ground in Darfur - a region the size of France - needed to be reinforced by international troops, including Nato.

The AU has struggled to stop the violence between the rebels and the government-backed Janjaweed militias in Darfur, where two million people still live displaced in camps.

The UN envoy in Sudan, Jan Pronk, says 400 people are now being killed each month in fighting in Darfur - double the number that it was a few months ago.
