Syndicate | By Bryan McKenzie / Daily Progress staff writer March 12, 2006 If your company bowling team... Bee seeks spellers...by adminIf your company bowling team struck out, if you couldn't get on base in the corporate softball league, if mind over muscle is your team motto, there's a competition made for you. The Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic and Literacy Volunteers are looking for corporate teams to compete in their third annual Spelling Bee and Dee, scheduled for the evening of April 27 at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel. The Spelling Bee and Dee is a series of word power games featuring spelling, definitions, area celebrities and good-natured competition among corporate three-person teams. "It's a competition of knowledge and brainpower," said Kelly Rothwell, of RFB&D. "It gives employees a fun bit of competition and it gives companies a chance to contribute to worthwhile causes in the community." Last year The Daily Progress team won the competition, edging out Crutchfield, with the Renaissance School team taking third. The previous year - the charity event's first - Crutchfield took the trophy, with State Farm in second and a tie for third between The Progress and a team sponsored by RFB&D. RFB&D is part of the nation's largest education library for people who have difficulty reading the printed word. Volunteers help record books - primarily textbooks and some selected novels and nonfiction - so that print-impaired students can keep up their studies. Albemarle offers free basic literacy and English as a Second Language tutoring to adults. They recruit, train and support volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with students. "The event brings together different corporate teams to support two important nonprofits in the county," Rothwell said. "It's also a lot of fun." This is cache, read story here |
