Syndicate | Sheena Anderson feels grateful that she was able to serve her country last fall. Although s... Resident serves country by danciby adminAlthough she traveled overseas on a military tour of Portugal, Greece, Italy, Spain and Turkey, she wasn't fighting in the armed forces. She donned her handmade decorative costume and danced for American and NATO troops. Ms. Anderson, 20, of Nashville, as a member of the Plains Indian Dancers, twirled and stomped a women's fancy shawl dance for servicemen, women and family members, as well as dignitaries and NATO officials during a rigorous month-long USO tour of Mediterranean countries. She left the United States on November 6 and spent the next month hopping flights, visiting different military bases, leaving early in the morning as the sun came up. They traveled four, five and six hours at a time, before arriving on base to perform, and then the group was back up the next morning to start the process over. When the group wasn't dancing, members were able to do just a little sightseeing on their one day off each week — she got to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa — and they also spent time letting the soldiers know how much they appreciate work being done overseas. Going overseas helped Ms. Anderson have a greater understanding of the military's role, and it touched her heart to be able to do something for the soldiers. Ms. Anderson started dancing about a decade ago — when she was 10 — while attending powwows. She grew an interest in the older girls' dancing and started emulating their movements. In just a few years, she began developing her own style. Although she would love to dance on tour again, she plans to go to college in Kentucky this fall, which would keep her from being able to travel with the same group this fall. Until she leaves for school, she'll continue working at Maldonado's Mexican Restaurant off of State Road 46 East and spending as many weekends as possible traveling to powwows. “I would do it every weekend if I could afford it,” she said, adding that she'd like to continue improving her skills and perhaps compete at the powwows. Whatever she plans to do, Ms. Anderson knows she wants to keep dancing. And when she has her own children, she wants to raise them going to powwows and learning about their heritage.
